Becoming a mother has been the catalyst to exploring creative elements of my own childhood that have gone years ignored. Though I’ve played with clay before, my first exposure to ceramics was taking a pottery class in the heart of centro Merida, Yucatán in 2021. I became fascinated with the modesty of slowly emerging objects born of the earth and making it last forever by the use of water, air and fire.
My work is mostly influenced by shapes and the inspiration mainly comes from the subtle moments of everyday life. One day it might be a structural sea shell swept to shore and another day it may be the design of the slide at my son’s favorite park. I allow myself to fully submit to the voyage and allow form to reveal itself while creating. The pieces are predominantly handbuilt using the ancient techniques of coil and slab building while some pieces are wheel thrown and finished off with some hand building.
This process of creation has created a sense of sanctuary of mindfulness, movement, space and deep connection all at once. The practice of pottery has become a ritual in my life and I’m grateful for you for being here and allowing me to share my stories with you.
My paintings are mainly intuitive, following the same spirit of shapes and a soft color palette. I’m developing an interest in the exploration of adding discarded materials to my art work.
“There was a beauty in the trash of the alleys which I had never noticed before; my vision seemed sharpened, rather than impaired. As I walked along it seemed to me that the flattened beer cans and paper s and weeds and junk mail had been arranged by the wind into patterns; these patterns, when I scrutinized them, lay distributed so as to comprise a visual language. ”
